Church Members - Ideas and Suggestions

We've invited members of our church to suggest hymns, readings, videos, music and poetry which they would like to recommend or share.

Hymn: "What More Could I Want"

Those who were able to attend the service led by Penny Flynn, will remember that we tried to include a video of a song written and performed by a fellow member of Downing Place URC, Jane Bower. We had some internet problems which made it a bit tricky - so here is that that video again and hopefully it will work fine for you!

An Uplifting Video.

Stewart has suggested this video...and who doesn't like a bit of Riverdance!

and Peter G has suggested this one.

A Favourite Hymn.

Liz has suggested the hymn 'The Day of Resurrection'. Liz wrote an article about this hymn in our June/July 2019 edition of Inspire which you can read below.  To listen to this hymn being sung by the choir of Gloucester Catherdral click here (This will open YouTube to play and you may need to skip an advert before you get to hear the hymn!  After listening, you may need to click the back arrow at the top left of your screen to return here.)

...And we were singing hymns and arias...

Irene has kindly put together some great suggestions of hymns and music that we can all enjoy. We've split them into 2 sections, each section would take about 20 minutes to listen to..again you may need to skip over an advert or two when YouTube opens.

A good part of our Church Worship revolves round music, be it Hymns, Psalms or Anthems with words sometimes taken straight from the scriptures. Singing can also be described as means of prayer. So here are A few good rousing hymns and pieces of comforting music.

Selection One

Guide me Oh thou Great Redeemer (in Scotland it is sung as Jehovah)

A good rousing hymn sung by the Fron Male Voice Choir, One for Rex and George (and few other Welshmen as well!).

In Christ alone  sung by Stuart Townend  I like the rhythms in this .

Be thou my Vision sung by Celtic Worship, nice to see young people enjoying the words and singing.

Lux Aeterna by Elgar sung by Voces8……..

My most favourite a cappella piece. We sang this at my last concert with Tapestry. What Joy.

Nearer my God to thee sung by BYU Mens Chorus. Again the rhythms are exciting making you focus on the words.

...                  and as a second selection

Selection Two
The Trumpet Shall Sound   - What can I say - it’s Bryn Terfel. What a way to start a service - the trumpet is sublime.

Christ the Lord is Risen Today  - the Tabernacle Choir. It’s EASTER. Halleluia!!.

(We may not agree with some of their theology but these folks can certainly sing!)

I know that my Redeemer Liveth  - Handel, from the Messiah sung by the Wonderful Joan Sutherland. My Aunt was a soloist and married to a Minister in Shetland and when I stayed with them in the summer this was one of the pieces she would sing in the services. Fond memories..

He Shall Feed His Flock -  another favourite from the Messiah. I would love to have the voice to sing this.

How Great Thou Art - I have vague memories of being taken to a Christian convention and hearing the massed choirs singing this.
God be with you till we meet again - That Tabernacle Choir again. A very apt and beautiful blessing for these times, and a message to all my friends at the Free Church.

(We have replaced the original video for this one with our own Free Church Video!)

The Benediction. The Lord bless you and keep you by  Lutkins.

Enjoy Nature.
